As we kick off a new month, were thrilled to shine the spotlight on one of our own - the incredible Dr. Marybeth Mazurek, our phenomenal Board Director!

Dr. Mazureks dedication to our society and the dental community is truly inspiring. Her tireless efforts to advance our profession and support her fellow members are a testament to her exceptional leadership and commitment.

Lets take a moment to celebrate Dr. Mazureks achievements and thank her for all that she does for our society. Were honored to have her as part of our team!

1. Can you tell us about your journey into dentistry and what motivated you to become a dentist?

Growing up, I spent countless hours in my moms office. I would pop my head into her operatory every 5 minutes to see what was going on because she always seemed like she was having a great time. At an early age, I admired my moms career because of the happiness I saw around the office. As I got older, I realized how wonderful a career dentistry is, from watching families grow up to being able to help people build confidence through a beautiful smile.

2. What drew you to joining leadership?

Lots of peer pressure... just kidding. Being the new person in the area, I wanted a way to get to know my colleagues. I want to be a part of this community and I believe joining leadership has made the most impact on that so far. I also am not very familiar with organized dentistry but i am aware that it is extremely impactful on the trajectory of our profession. I want to be knowledgeable of the changes that are happening and to assist in making those positive changes.

3. How has the dental profession evolved during your career, and what significant changes have you observed?

Being only a 2020 graduate, I have not seen a ton of change but I am a huge fan of digital dentistry. I know there is always a place for analog impressions but I love the diversity of my intraoral scanner. I am also passionate about conservative treatment. Dental materials are constantly improving and it gives me a great deal of satisfaction when vital pulp therapy is successful!

4. How has being a member of the SBVCDS leadership benefited you, your practice, or the profession?

I have made great relationships with other dentists through SBVCDS and I do not believe that would have happened unless I joined leadership. I feel as though i can reach out with out hesitation for advice or even just to hang out after a long,stressful day at work!

5. In your opinion, what are some of the most pressing issues facing the dental profession today, and how do you think they can be addressed?

I believe it is unfortunate when care is driven by insurance companies. Insurance companies have too much power, dictating treatment and fee schedules when they are not the ones sitting chairside or running a practice. Also, the cost of dental school has significantly increased in the last 10 years. New dentists are graduating with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt pushing them to settle for a DSO work life.

6. What advice would you give to aspiring dentists who considering entering leadership?

If you are thinking about any type of leadership, look into it! You can always get your feet wet in smaller roles and then dive in deeper if it ignites a spark in you. It is a commitment, but it is worth while. I have learned so much through SBVCDS leadership in the past year and a half.
